Nez Perce County officials will host a public presentation on residential fire protection coverage and the procedures for establishing new fire districts. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
The event will take place in the first-floor Confluence Room at the Nez Perce County Courthouse, located at 1230 Main St. in Lewiston. Commissioner Gish will lead the discussion, detailing how fire response services are currently organized across the jurisdiction.
Topics for the presentation include an overview of existing fire protection districts, volunteer fire departments, and areas served by subscription-based services. Officials also plan to address regions that have limited or no structural fire protection. A key component of the meeting will be a demonstration of the county’s interactive fire protection map.
Attendees will learn how to use the digital tool to look up specific addresses and review their current coverage levels. The session is designed to allow residents to ask questions directly to county staff.
County officials will outline the legal process for creating a new fire protection district. This procedure requires gathering petitions, followed by a review from county commissioners. The process also mandates a public hearing and concludes with a vote by qualified electors living within the proposed district boundaries.
Rural property owners are specifically encouraged to attend the meeting to understand their options for emergency services. The interactive map is available online at the county website under Departments, then Rural Fire, by selecting “Nez Perce County Fire Protection Information Map.”
