The City of Lewiston will begin replacing aging water infrastructure in downtown this fall, with work scheduled to commence September 8 and continue through November.
The project centers on D Street between 7th Street and Temple Lane, where contractors will remove the existing 6-inch steel water main and install a new 12-inch ductile iron line. A stormwater system replacement on D Street between 7th and 8th streets is also part of the work.
The city contracted KLK (Kenaston, Leone & Keeble Group, LLC) to handle the three-month replacement effort. D Street will operate at reduced capacity during construction, shrinking from two lanes to one. Access from D Street to both 7th and 8th streets will be closed intermittently as work progresses, beginning at the D and 7th Street intersection.
Residents and downtown business operators should anticipate traffic delays and plan alternate routes where possible. The larger diameter replacement main is designed to improve water delivery reliability and flow capacity to the downtown core.
What Comes Next: The project runs through November, with lane restrictions in effect throughout. Drivers are urged to use caution in the construction zone and expect periodic closures of cross-street access on D Street as crews advance the work.
