The blaze broke out at approximately 4:10 a.m. at 557 Park Street. Firefighters arriving on scene found smoke billowing from apartment windows and the doorway. Lewiston police officers evacuated the occupants while fire crews located the flames in the kitchen area, where they had spread to the stove, hood, and surrounding cabinetry before being extinguished.

The fire department deployed three structural engines, three ambulances, and two chief officers — a total of 17 personnel — to bring the fire under control. Clarkston and Wheatland fire departments also responded through a mutual aid agreement known as Valley Auto Aid.
Two occupants of the apartment were evaluated by medical crews at the scene and released without injury. Firefighters also located four cats inside the unit, secured them, and returned them to their owners unharmed.

Fire officials determined that combustible materials left on the stovetop ignited after a burner was accidentally turned on. The incident resulted in an estimated $5,000 in smoke and fire damage to the apartment.
