Idaho Offers License-Free Fishing June 13 with Local Events in Lewiston and Troy

Anglers across Idaho can hit the water without a fishing license on Saturday, June 13, as the state’s annual Free Fishing Day gives residents a no-cost opportunity to cast a line at their favorite spots.

Idaho Fish and Game is organizing events in both Lewiston and Troy, where staff and volunteers will be on hand to provide loaner equipment, tackle, and basic instruction for those new to the sport. The program is open to participants of all ages and is designed to lower the barrier to entry for families and first-time anglers looking to explore Idaho’s fishing opportunities.

Rules Still Apply

While the license requirement is waived for the day, all other standard fishing regulations remain fully in effect. That includes bag limits and any gear restrictions applicable to the waters being fished. Participants are encouraged to review current Idaho Fish and Game rules before heading out to ensure they stay in compliance.

Getting Families Outdoors

The event reflects a broader effort to connect Idaho residents — particularly younger generations — with the state’s outdoor heritage. Free Fishing Day serves as an entry point for families who may be curious about fishing but haven’t yet taken the step of obtaining a license or investing in gear. With loaner equipment available at the designated Lewiston and Troy locations, cost and inexperience are no longer obstacles.

For those looking for more ways to enjoy the Lewis-Clark Valley’s waterways this summer, the World Jet River Championship is also making a stop in Lewiston, bringing competitive river action to the Snake and Clearwater rivers.

What Comes Next

Residents interested in participating should plan to arrive at one of the organized event locations in Lewiston or Troy on June 13 to take advantage of the free equipment and instruction available. Those who develop a lasting interest in the sport can follow up by purchasing an Idaho fishing license through Idaho Fish and Game for future outings throughout the season.
