Lewiston High Student Earns Runner-Up Honors at Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

Lewiston High School Student Named Runner-Up High School Vocalist at Idaho’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

A student from Lewiston High School earned regional recognition at one of the Pacific Northwest’s most prestigious music competitions earlier this month, placing among the top individual performers at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho.

Jase McKnight, a vocalist at Lewiston High School, was named runner-up High School Vocalist at the festival, which ran April 22–25 at the University of Idaho. Along with the honor, McKnight received a $1,000 Avista Foundation scholarship that can be applied toward any field of study at the university.

A Prestigious Recognition for a Lewis-Clark Valley Student

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival draws student musicians from across the region each year, making McKnight’s runner-up finish a notable achievement for Lewiston and Nez Perce County. The festival, held annually on the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, is considered one of the largest and most celebrated jazz education events in the country, attracting hundreds of high school and college performers competing in both vocal and instrumental categories.

McKnight’s performance stood out among a competitive field of high school vocalists, earning him placement at the top of the individual rankings. The runner-up designation places him among the festival’s elite performers for the current year.

The Avista Foundation scholarship is awarded annually as part of the festival’s recognition program for outstanding soloists. The $1,000 award carries no restriction on field of study, giving McKnight flexibility as he looks toward his academic future. The scholarship reflects a broader partnership between the Avista Foundation and the festival to invest in the musical and academic development of Idaho’s youth.

Local Schools Building a Track Record in Competition

McKnight’s recognition adds to a growing list of competitive achievements by Nez Perce County student-athletes and performers in recent months. Local schools have continued to field strong competitors across a variety of disciplines. Lapwai High School’s girls basketball program has also drawn regional attention this year for its on-court performance.

For Lewiston High School, McKnight’s finish at the Hampton Festival represents a strong showing in the performing arts. Music programs at public high schools across Idaho have faced varying levels of financial support in recent years, making individual student achievements at events like the Hampton Festival an important reminder of the value these programs deliver to students and communities alike.

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival has long served as a proving ground for young musicians in Idaho and the broader Northwest. Named after the legendary jazz vibraphonist and University of Idaho alumnus Lionel Hampton, the festival carries significant cultural weight and offers student performers an opportunity to compete before serious evaluators in a professional setting.

McKnight’s runner-up finish, backed by a scholarship from the Avista Foundation, highlights what student dedication to the performing arts can produce — recognition, financial support, and a pathway toward continued education. For the Lewiston community, it serves as a point of local pride in a student who competed at the regional level and came away with a meaningful award.
