Lewiston officials proclaimed September 25 as “Dolly Parton Appreciation Day,” recognizing the country music icon’s contributions to children’s literacy and generosity. The date selection references Parton’s hit song “9 to 5.”
The proclamation highlights the work of Twin County United Way, which launched Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in the Lewis-Clark Valley in November 2022. The program delivers free, age-appropriate books monthly to children from birth through age five in Asotin and Nez Perce counties.
Since its inception, the initiative has mailed 52,798 books to local families. Currently, more than 1,400 children are enrolled in the program, receiving their monthly deliveries. Additionally, 1,061 children have graduated from the program after reaching age five.
“Dolly Parton has given children around the world something incredibly special, the opportunity to grow up surrounded by books,” said Kristin Kemak, CEO of Twin County United Way.
Kemak emphasized that while the books are free for families, the operational costs require ongoing community support. “Free to families doesn’t mean free to provide,” she said.
Twin County United Way is seeking donations and volunteer assistance to sustain and expand the literacy effort. Residents are encouraged to participate on September 25 by contributing funds or helping eligible families enroll in the program.
