The City of Lewiston issued a drinking water warning Monday for a small section of the Southport area near the airport after a low-pressure event compromised water system integrity.
Fewer than 25 properties in the affected zone received a door hanger notification advising residents of the potential contamination risk. During low-pressure events, the drinking water supply carries an increased chance of containing disease-causing organisms, according to city officials.
The city is taking immediate corrective steps to resolve the issue. Fire hydrants in the affected area will be flushed, and water samples will be collected for testing. City staff anticipate resolving the problem within 24 to 48 hours of the Monday incident.
Residents in the Southport area who are uncertain whether their property is affected should contact the City of Lewiston. Once the water system has been restored to safe conditions, the city will post a resolution update and notify affected properties by door hanger.
This warning is one of several public health alerts issued across Nez Perce County in recent weeks. Health officials previously advised residents to take preventive measures following detection of rabid bats in the county, and air quality warnings and burn restrictions have been extended across the region due to smoke from nearby wildfires.
