A John Deere tractor was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon along Flat Iron Road near Waha, Idaho, after flames briefly jumped to surrounding grass before crews managed to contain the blaze.
Nez Perce County Fire dispatched units at approximately 2:45 p.m. and arrived to find the tractor fully engulfed. The fire spread to adjacent vegetation but did not travel far, largely because the grass in the area was still green — a natural barrier that limited how quickly the flames could advance.
No injuries were reported. Firefighters contained the fire without significant further spread.
The cause of the tractor fire was not immediately released. Waha sits in the upland farming country south of Lewiston, where dry summer conditions can quickly turn equipment fires into larger grass fires. Nez Perce County has seen several fire incidents in recent weeks — a 108-acre wildfire along Highway 95 north of Lewiston was contained by crews earlier this season, and a vehicle fire on Lewiston Hill ignited a 90-acre blaze that threatened nearby homes.
Friday’s incident serves as a reminder that agricultural and vehicle fires pose a persistent risk during summer months, even when vegetation has not yet fully dried out. Residents in rural areas are encouraged to report smoke or flames promptly by calling 911.
