A transformer explosion in North Lewiston triggered a significant power outage Thursday evening, cutting electricity to more than 1,100 Avista customers across a stretch of the city’s north end, according to the utility.
The affected area extended from the 21st and Main streets corridor up toward 12th Avenue. Avista crews initially projected restoration by 11:30 p.m., but workers were able to bring service back online roughly an hour ahead of schedule, around 10:30 p.m.
Officers Direct Traffic as Signals Go Dark
With traffic signals offline, Lewiston police moved to manage intersections at several high-volume locations. For approximately 30 minutes, drivers navigated major crossings without functioning lights. Officers eventually cleared the scene as conditions returned to normal once power was restored. Authorities noted that some officers may have also been handling unrelated calls during the same period.
This is the latest in a string of public safety incidents drawing attention in Lewiston. Earlier this week, a power outage affecting more than 1,100 customers was also reported in the area, and a shop fire left a building a total loss elsewhere in the city.
What Comes Next
Avista has not released additional details on the cause or extent of transformer damage. Residents in affected neighborhoods are encouraged to report any continued service issues directly to the utility. Lewiston police have not indicated any ongoing traffic or safety concerns tied to the incident.
